One might think that the celebration of International Peace Day (21 September) in a country at peace is less important that in a country at war. However, this would not take into consideration the role each individual can take to achieve peace.
The UK-based NGO Rights and Humanity answered the question of how to celebrate Peace Day in a country at peace: promote awareness of the Day. Thinking about global peace and promoting the involvement of individuals in a worthy cause are indeed the answers Rights and Humanity gives.
Through an interesting mix of conferences and workshops involving practitioners of peacebuilding, scholars, artists and interested individuals, Rights and Humanity will promote discussions around the theme of sustainable peace. While practitioners who have worked on peacebuilding in conflict-affected areas will help the audience to understand the challenges they face in their everyday work, their thoughts are supposed to engage individuals. Not only will they give people an idea of what achieving peace requires, but their role will also be to think, alongside with participants, on potential ways of informing and acting for global peace. The long-term goal is double-fold: providing information and inducing action.
Sharing experiences and different visions of peacebuilding should lead to discussions on individual involvement towards a sustainable global peace. In fact, the conference that Rights and Humanity plans for 21 September raises an interesting question: “what can WE do?”
Global Truce seeks to induce a global ceasefire. This year, NGOs, Peace One Day and Interpeace have joined forces to coordinate an NGO Global Truce Coalition. The Coalition involves NGOs from all countries and active in different issue-domains ranging from health to peacebuilding. They are all committed to promote a global ceasefire through a wide range of actions.
