UNICEF: Hundreds of Children Killed in Syria

As violence intensifies in Syria, children continue to be the victims. The Executive Director of the UNICEF, Anthony Lake, has expressed his concern as calls from the international community to stop the escalation of violence remain unheeded.

“More and more children are being killed and injured. The injured are too often unable to get medical care. Many have witnessed violence and have lost loved ones” Lake said.

According to the latest report (23 February) by the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria, set up one year ago by the UN, more than 500 children have been killed since March 2011.

“It is deeply disturbing to hear the pleas of Syrian families in need of help and to see the worsening suffering of children” he stated.

UNICEF is calling for an immediate end to all acts of violence and immediate humanitarian access to all those in need of assistance. “We ask all involved to remember that the children bear no responsibility in the violence among their elders. They are quite simply, the victims of this tragedy”.
