55 years of expanding service delivery.

In 1956, three doctors drew up a groundbreaking plan to provide mobile medical assistance to remote regions of East Africa, where they had all worked for many years as reconstructive surgeons. Fifty-five years later, AMREF has developed into a multifaceted healthcare organization working on the most critical health issues facing Africa. From HIV/AIDS and malaria, to water and sanitation, surgical outreach, training of health professionals and community health, AMREF is committed to indigenous solutions based on international science. 

AMREF’s strategy seeks to strengthen health systems and to design and enhance interventions that improve people’s access to health through their active participation. The organization implements its projects through country programs in Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, Southern Sudan and South Africa, while delivering training and consulting support to an additional 30 countries in the region. It has proven to be a pioneer in community-based healthcare, whilst also using the knowledge gained from its projects to inform, influence and advocate for systemic change in health governance at the national and international levels. 

Looking to the future, AMREF has resolved to channel its immediate energies into maternal and child health, in a bid to take the lead in moving the continent towards meeting the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.
