Founded 90 years ago by Oxford teacher and sociologist Eglantyne Jebb to assist ‘children of the enemy’ in the wake of World War I, Save the Children International is dedicated to changing the lives of children in need through diverse programming spanning protection, education, health, nutrition, child rights governance, emergency relief and recovery. The organization now has a presence in 120 countries across the globe and in 2010 alone touched the lives of more than 100 million children. 

Previously an alliance of 29 different organizations, Save the Children International transitioned last year to become a single, consolidated movement with a view to efficiency gains and better operational alignment. The organization is guided by a partnershipdriven approach based around a three-pronged strategy of innovative interventions, effective advocacy at the policy level, and the scaling up of best practice programs. 

Recently, the organization has prioritized two aspects of its work, aiming – firstly – to be the leading agency addressing the unique needs of children during humanitarian emergencies. In 2010, the organization conducted 41 operations in the context of floods (Pakistan), post-earthquake reconstruction (Haiti) and severe food insecurity (Niger). At the systemic level, Save the Children International also continues to advocate forcefully via its ‘EVERY ONE’ campaign to reduce avoidable infant mortality.
